Reflections on a Book Launch

My editor told me more than once that people want to know more about me – how I think, what I’m feeling.  So as I find my way into blogging, thought I’d offer up my latest book-related experience.

It happened faster than I expected.  Literally.  I thought my first announcement for Engaging Emergence: Turning Upheaval into Opportunity would go out sometime in August.  Instead, I learned last week that I needed to get the word out for pre-orders ASAP.  So I put aside plans for more web site prep and got started.

The message below went out yesterday – July 13th – to about 5,000 people.  I’m guessing that it reached two to four times as many folks.  The results?

I saw the the book’s rank at Amazon move to 4,100 from around 500,000 overnight.  And the good wishes coming my way are a thrill!  I feel bathed in  friendship and appreciated for the work I’ve been doing since last July.

Here are two comments that made me laugh:

How absolutely exciting.  I can’t wait to read it.  I had to laugh.  Not an hour ago, I talked with my web designer and asked him to make the byline on part of the New Stories site “engaging with emerging” , having heard nothing about your book, which will now go to the top of my resource list.  I guess I’m getting on the wave.  Congratulations!

Congratulations on your new ‘baby’ – although it probably feels like a maturing adolescent to you by now.

Here’s the announcement that touched off the flood of good wishes and headed Engaging Emergence up the ranks at Amazon:

Friends:

Engaging Emergence: Turning Upheaval into Opportunity is almost here… I’m excited to share the news that my book will ship from the printer on August 6th!

As it makes its way to the major online booksellers, and other retailers across the country, I’d love your support by pre-ordering the book. Pre-orders tell the online booksellers that the book is generating buzz in the marketplace and that it will have broad appeal once available.  A strong pre-order campaign also influences how many copies the online stores will order and stock.

To get that buzz going, I’m asking everyone I know to help me get the book off to a fast start! Please consider picking up a copy of the book, perhaps even ordering a second copy as a gift for a friend.  Or forward this message on to people you think would find the book of interest so that they can pre-order a copy for themselves.

I’m thrilled with how the book turned out.  Esthetically, it is beautiful.  And based on the feedback from many of you, people are finding the content useful and inspiring.  I look forward to your comments.

Engaging Emergence offers principles, practices, and real-world stories for bringing compassion, creativity, and wisdom to the entire arc of change—from disruption to coherence.  For more about the contents, visit http://www.engagingemergence.com.
